Get to Know the 2021 BCC Staff Behind Your Event

An open book

Do you have a favorite podcast you like listening to, or is there a favorite book you’ve read several times over? Perhaps there’s a YouTube channel you love watching, or maybe comedy is what does it for you! Are you a reader of trends, technology and news?

Our Favorite Books, Podcasts, and YouTube Channels

Technology keeps us connected, entertained and informed. But the question always comes up.

Are you a reader, a listener, do you prefer videos? Or all of the above? Here are the answers from all of us at BCC Live.

For this installment of our shared stories, we thought we could make this topic a bit more interactive, which of course will require your participation. So read on, because we want your comments below!

With such an array of topics and platforms, it seems we have all the choices available to us, but ultimately the things that interest us makes us go from one place to the other, looking for more.

What seems even more interesting is, that among us, the way we use technology and what we look for (content, book selection, podcasts, comedy, etc.) differs from person to person.  A wonderful thing that clearly shows how each individual is unique! And how fantastic that is!

As a team, this quickly demonstrates that a group of creative and unique individuals may have different preferences and interests outside the workplace; but together, all ideas, creativity and innovation flows, and it is precisely because of this!

Here are our favorites, let’s call it staff picks

Take a look, and you will get to see a glimpse of our personalities and interests.

“I admittedly am not a huge reader outside of educational texts and how-to blogs. But here are some books that have stuck with me recently!”

A Song of Ice and Fire
Author: George R.R. Martin
“At the time I was commuting to a job across town 1.5 hours each way, and this was an excellent time killer on audible!”

Harry Potter
Author: J.K. Rowling
“You may not have heard of this one, it’s kind of abstract. But go check it out!”

The Martian
Author: Andy Weir
“Short and sweet, there’s nothing like obsessing over technical minutia of technology and science to day dream about how we could put a man on Mars!”

1984
Author: George Orwell
“Another classic.”

PODCASTS

“I LOVE podcasts. You’ll never find me driving alone or flying to an event without listening to a podcast.”

99% Invisible
“This has always been a favorite. I’ve always been fascinated by great engineering and design, and Roman Mars shares the same sentiment, looking at the 99% of your every day life that you never notice, because of it’s great design.”

Radiolab
“A classic. Among the favorites of many, this was actually the first podcast I listened to while touring in a band way back in the day.”

Twenty Thousand Hertz
“A great introduction to principles of sound, told through stories that are relatable and interesting to non-audio professionals. Who is the voice behind Siri? How was the THX sound created? What’s the history behind the NBC chime?”

Sound Design Live
“More geared toward professional sound designers, this podcast interviews the industry’s greatest leaders and innovators in sound reinforcement and design.”

YOUTUBE CHANNELS

GMBN – Global Mountain Bike Network
“Sometimes after watching a bunch of funny videos with Blake racing himself or riding parks with absurd skinny handlebars, I think I’m a pro enduro rider and go too big on my next bike ride.”

Nate Hills
“I love the utility of this channel. I’m always looking for new MTB trails to ride around the Front Range, and Nate almost always has a professional GoPro video of him riding my local trails way better than I ever could.”

Vsauce
“I just like science. Enough said?”

Mark Rober
“See above! Although this is for more of an entertainment value through science.”

Babish Culinary Universe
“Watch this guy cook some of the most famous dishes from pop culture, and you’ll be sure to laugh. Pro tip, try his chocolate chip cookie recipe!”

It’s clear by Dylan’s selections, that technology, science, cooking, mountain biking, and current events are some of his interests. And in regard to books, well… he’s chosen some true classics, and a variety of themes. Keep reading, and you will find out if he’s the only Harry Potter fan at BCC!

BOOKS

I’m a big fan of historical fiction, and the titles below are great representations of history with storytelling.

The Historian
Author: Elizabeth Kostova
“A historian goes missing looking for Dracula in Eastern Europe, and his daughter goes looking for him. Real historical places rich in myth, linked to a fictional story.”

11/22/63
Author: Stephen King
“Derry, time travel and the Kennedy assassination. This book has received awards due to the historical research and facts presented in a fascinating story.”

Fall of Giants (Century Trilogy) Author: Ken Follett
“Five families, their stories intertwined within 3 generations. Beginning in World War I (book 1), World War II (book 2), and the Cold War (Book 3).”

Brave New World
Author: Aldous Huxley
“Not historical fiction, but social science fiction! Written in 1932. A tale of citizens in a distant future taking happy pills, in a dystopian society.”

PODCASTS

My choices are mostly under science and becoming a faster triathlete and cyclist, and then… true crime, and a guilty pleasure that brings me joy (you can tell which one is which on the list.)

YOUTUBE CHANNELS

Again, it’s all about science and Rocket launches, Triathlon, and a Venezuelan comedian that reminds me of good times growing up in Venezuela.

In the most technology-driven sense of the word, Dave has submerged himself in tech, and his main sources of reading material are found online.  Consumer reports and World News are on top of his list, and as far as digital media, his Facebook feed and searches are mainly on: World Events and News, Springer Spaniels, Video Equipment, IRONMAN, Skiing and Cycling.

YOUTUBE CHANNELS

IRONMAN Triathlon
Have you checked out the IRONMAN Triathlon channel yet? We are all fans over here!

Ryan’s choices reflect his interests as an avid learning of tech (Final Cut and Motion Graphics), and also his affinity for art, architecture and comedy. He says about Art: “I consume a lot of typography, modern pop art, murals and abstract content. All from a variety of sources, way too many to list. My feed is pretty much all over the place. Anything that I can draw inspiration from for my own artwork is what I gravitate to.”

As for YouTube content, Ryan also talks about learning: “In the beginning of the pandemic I was using YouTube to grab inspiration on some DIY wood working projects which included some shelving, blanket ladders, a bed side table, and a shoe rack. All made from free, repurposed pallets.”

As far as Digital Media consumption of content, it goes something like this:

Photography
Colorado photography group on Facebook, all sorts of aerial drone shots of landscapes and architecture. As well as any and all skiing videos/photos. “I’m fascinated with abandoned, industrial buildings and the architecture of old European cities such as France, Spain and Italy.”

Comedians
Tom Segura, Bert Kreischer, Ari Shaffir and Chris Rock. “Laughter is the best medicine.”

BOOKS

Where the Red Fern Grows
Author: Wilson Rawls
“A story about a young boy rescuing a dog and their adventures.”

Night Driving: The Invention of the Wheel and Other Blues. A Memoir Author: Dick Dorworth
“A story about a young ski bum kid driving across the west to ski and explore the freedoms of the open road.”

BOOKS

Start with Why
Author: Simon Sinek
“Great book about communicating using story and emotion and utilizing that in business.”

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Author: Douglas Adams
“A classic. Incredibly funny, smart, and sincere. Absolutely love it.”

Harry Potter
Author: J.K. Rowling
“Does this need an explanation? 😉”

I am Legend
Author: Richard Matheson
“One of my favorite books of all time. Incredibly well paced and tense with a great twist and the greatest ending ever.”

YOUTUBE CHANNELS

Outside Xbox & Outside Xtra “These are ostensibly a gaming channel that does let’s plays and live streams, but their personalities and humor shine in every video. Incredibly fun to watch and the only YouTube channel I have ever bought merch from.”

MKBHD
“If you want tech reviews, this is the guy to get them from. Incredibly well produced and informative.”

First We Feast
“The series Hot Ones comes from this channel and you can watch interviews with celebrities while they eat insanely hot wings. Most struggle and it is hilarious.”

Mel, always ready. Sunglasses at night!

“Company vs Company to see how many companies measure up against their competitors. Pretty cool to get the back stories and see how different strategies work out.”

BOOKS

Mel says: “I read an enormous amount of books each year and it’s hard to narrow down favorites! That being said, here are a few you might like 😊”

The Shining and Dr. Sleep
Author: Stephen King
“Not going to lie, I love me some Stephen King! If he writes it, I try to read it. I laugh because I see I’m not alone in the BCC family with my love of Mr. King. I tried to decide which one to put on my list. I wanted to put The Stand, and I recently finished The Institute, but I thought a twofer might be a better route. If you read The Shining years ago, it’s time to re-read and then tackle the follow-up Dr. Sleep! So good. They are both movies now, but don’t cheat. Read the books!”

Where the Crawdads Sing
Author: Delia Owens
“Simply a good story of loss, love and empowerment. Great storyline and a quick read. I listened to his as an audio book for a long drive and absolutely loved it.”

Cinder (series)
Author: Marissa Meyer
“YA series based off the Cinderella story with a twist to include cyborgs, evil Queens and a pandemic. There are multiple books in this series, and they are all great. Truly engaging page turners. Creative and a good read.”

Educated
Author: Tara Westover
“A heartbreaking and empowering story told from the point of view of the author looking back at her life. Hard to believe this story is based in modern times. You read and think this must be dated in the early 1900s – how could this kind of mentality still exist in a modern America.”

PODCASTS

The Lady Vanishes
“This one grabbed me and didn’t let go. Still waiting on more updates. Story of a mother who vanishes and her daughter’s quest to find out what happened. Random people from around the world are helping to find out what happened.”

The Moment
“Light-hearted and fun stories from couples share their ‘moment’ they fell in love or popped the question. It’s truly fun to listen to these stories.”

Good Life Project
“Interviews of all different kinds of people who are making the world better in one way or another. Uplifting!”

And Mel adds: “Last but not least, for my love of true crime”

The Billionaire Boys Club
“You can’t make this stuff up. A crazy story of greed, murder, money and boys who think they are above it all.”

Business Wars
”Company vs company to see how companies measure up against their competitors. Pretty cool to get the back stories and see how different strategies work out.”
